Having a pair of shoes resoled, once an ordinary errand, is something of a quest in parts of the country. By counting, department by department, the cobblers still trading, Skolyx has mapped France's unequal access to shoe repair - a geographic divide that is not simply a town-versus-country split.

The divide does not follow the map of cities

Relative to population, shoe repair grows scarce along a rural diagonal running from the centre to the south-west. Creuse, Haute-Marne, Charente and Indre are among the least-served departments, with one cobbler per 40,000 residents or fewer. Paris, by contrast, holds nearly 18 cobbleries per 100,000 residents: a density gap of 7.6 times between the capital and the most deprived department.

The trade is not dying out, though: half of all active cobbleries were registered since 2012, and one in five since 2021. It is a high-turnover craft that renews itself - but that renewal concentrates where demand holds, not in the already under-served areas. The story is therefore not the disappearance of the cobbler, but unequal access: depending on the department, having your shoes resoled stays easy or becomes a struggle.

Making shoes last when repair grows scarce:

Favour a stitched construction (Goodyear, Blake), which can be resoled several times, over a glued sole that cannot be repaired.
Rotate two pairs and use shoe trees after each wear : the leather dries without distorting and the sole wears more slowly.
Care for the leather regularly : a fed, weatherproofed upper delays the wear that sends a shoe to the cobbler - or to the bin.

Count of establishments listed in the SIRENE business register under activity code 95.23Z (repair of footwear and leather goods), by department, via the public API recherche-entreprises.api.gouv.fr (2026). Density: active establishments per 100,000 residents (INSEE population). Closed share: struck-off establishments as a proportion of all ever registered (active + struck-off) still on record - a measure of turnover, not an annual time series and not a net disappearance: nationally, half of all active cobbleries were registered since 2012 (registration date, sometimes reset on a change of owner or premises). Code 95.23Z includes leather-goods repair beyond footwear alone.
